Two Teams Score So Many Points This Week That Our Computers Stopped Counting

Thanks to SurfAholics Alpha and Lucky 13, I get to write the nerdiest post ever on CTP Teams…so if you like nerdy you will like this.

It seems that the way that team points are counted on CTP Teams, there is an upper limit of 2,147 483, 647 – two billion, one hundred forty-seven million, four hundred and eighty-three thousand six hundred and forty-seven.

Getting from 0 to 2,147 483, 647 is easy, but ask the computer to add one to that number and it doesn’t know what to do.

We can see this by studying two recent screenshots taken a few minutes apart, (although the actual time between screenshots is not relevant):

Two CTP Teams teams reach the highest numbet our computer can count Two CTP Teams teams reach the highest numbet our computer can count 1

These screenshots show that both Lucky 13 and the Alphas have reached the number 2,147 483, 647, also known as the eighth Mersenne prime, and the count has stopped there. We can see that the counter is still working for numbers lower than this one because the total for Uber Surfers has increased in the time between these screenshots.

So what is the significance of the number known as the eight Mersenne prime?

Well it seems that Boris from Lucky 13 actually recognized the numberย  as soon as he saw it…how nerdy is that?

According to Wikipedia this number is “…the maximum positive value for a 32-bit signed binary integer in computing. It is therefore the maximum value for variables declared as integers in many programming languages, and the maximum possible score, money, etc. for many video games. The appearance of the number often reflects an error, overflow condition, or missing value.”

So the big question is what is the actual number of points scored by the top two teams this week? Well the individual points are still being recorded so it is a simple matter to simply add them all up.

This gives us, at the time of writing this blog post:

1. SurfAholics Alpha – 3,375,536,767

2. Lucky 13 – 2,346,810,473

That is so cool! Yup I am a nerd ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. Jon says:

I don’t mean to be nerdy but surely the binary representation of this number is incorrect because it contains the number 2. Binary only consists of 1 and 0. OMG! I’m a nerd lol

      shhhh

    • Patrick Griffin says:

You are quite correct…All the numbers to the far right should be subscript numbers according to the Wikipedia page so I have taken that bit out of the post. Anyone who wants to see it can follow the Wikipedia link.

  10. Jon says:

Maybe the solution to the ‘dead-heat’ problem is to get Patrick to add each teams individual scores manually. He can let us know the result next March. Maybe ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • Patrick Griffin says:

I did that for this blog post.
If anyone is interested, rather than adding them manually on a calculator, which would take a long time and is subject to transcription errors, I found a program online where I could just copy and paste the numbers in order to get the sum required.

  11. Karen Kuty says:

What’s really freakish is seeing teams with nearly 2 million points only minutes after the week changes….

  12. Anybody remember the TV commercial a while ago disclaiming “You have reached the end of the internet”

  13. Ken Wolff says:

It is amazing what you can do at the start of a new week. Nerdbirds are + 8 from last week and in 10th place overall. That will likely change when peeople on the other side of the world wake up but It is fun to see what a difference you can make coming out of the gates fast.

  14. Wendy Browning says:

I honestly didn’t know if I should keep on surfing or not. I checked to see if the individual score was going up and it was so I continued. But how funny was that? I know for me it was so funny and I was glad to have witnessed it. Go Lucky 13!

  15. Elizabeth says:

LOL! Yes, great commercial! Great job teams!
